Module 18: Burns

Good day,

I hope that you are well.

I am looking for clarification as to why the guidance suggests that an extraglotic airway (such an iGel) airway should not be used in patient with suspected inhalation injury?

I understand that more advanced airway interventions may be required if the inhalation injury causing sufficient swelling but what if the injury has not reached that point yet? And not all treating staff have more advanced airway interventions in their scope of practice.

The only thing I that comes to mind is the placement of an extraglotic/supraglottic airway could cause an increased rate of swelling by irritating the damaged tissue?

Please can you share your thoughts; I always like to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding.

Many thank and regards
